Murray-Bruce calls on Arase to #FreeEse

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has called on the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, to free Ese Oruru and ensure her return to her parents.

“IGP Arase, Ese is a minor and can’t consent to marry. The Constitution is clear. Your duty is to ensure her release to her parents #FreeEse,” Murray Bruce tweeted.

Murray-Bruce, who noted that the Nigerian Constitution “respects no person”, criticised Arase for saying that the 14-year-old’s release was delayed due to the Emir of Kano’s Hajj trip.

Arase had told The PUNCH on Sunday that the help of the Emir, at whose palace, Ese was allegedly being held was needed to free Ese.

“The Emir decided that he was going to mediate. But, because of his trip to Mecca with the President; that was what caused the delay. But now that he is back, we are going to sort it out as quickly as possible,” he said.

But Murray-Bruce said the IGP must enforce the constitution and free Ese or the matter would be escalated to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

5-Your statement that Ese’s release is “dependent” on persons is sad. Her release is GUARANTEED by the CONSTITUTION. Ensure you #FreeEse

6-If you refuse to enforce the Nigerian CONSTITUTION this matter will be escalated to The United Nations Commission on Human Rights #FreeEse — Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) February 29, 2016

7-The IGP is in a pole position to show that there are no sacred cows in Nigeria and everyone is equal before the law #FreeEse

Murray-Bruce, however, defended the Emir, who has been criticised by Nigerians over his involvement in the issue, saying that the Emir was not behind the girl or her family’s ordeal.

3-Many of you have not spoken to Emir Sanusi over this matter. I have and I am convinced that he is not behind it in ANY way #FreeEse. — Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) February 29, 2016

He also called on Nigerians to ensure that the issue does not become an ethnic or religious problem.

1-I need to say that no one should allow their emotions get over them and make them tar a whole ethnicity and religion over #FreeEse

— Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) February 29, 2016

2-The action of an individual is not the action of an ethnicity or a religion. Let us be guided in our utterances over #FreeEse — Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) February 29, 2016

The outspoken Senator been silent on the story despite the launch of a “Free Ese” campaign by PUNCH, which drew the attention of thousands of Nigerians to the sordid story, a development many were quick to point out on the social media.

He, however, explained that he only found out about the story today.

1-I have been on an international flight without Internet and just landed at MMA only to be briefed on the abduction of Ese #FreeEse
